The important figure is the renewal price. HostGator states that customers on an introductory or discounted hosting rate keep that price for their initial term, after which the hosting plan renews at the regular rate. Longer billing terms can reduce the effective monthly cost, but the full term is generally billed upfront.

For this reason, we don’t recommend choosing a HostGator plan purely because of the promotional price displayed on the signup page. Compare the initial cost, renewal cost and length of the billing commitment before deciding which plan offers the best value.

Australian customers should also remember that HostGator publishes its pricing in US dollars. The amount ultimately paid in Australian dollars can therefore vary with the exchange rate and any applicable payment or tax considerations.

Some longer-term HostGator hosting plans can include a free domain registration for the first year, but the domain subsequently renews at its regular annual price. Optional services and add-ons can also have their own renewal charges.

Our advice: check HostGator’s current offer immediately before purchasing and compare the renewal price rather than focusing only on the introductory discount. A slightly more expensive introductory plan can sometimes represent better long-term value if its features and renewal structure suit your website.
